An overnight stay at Lockhouse 21 blends history, engineering, and nature into an unparalleled canal experience. Delve into the canal-life of 1916 within the lockhouse’s masonry walls, where the Swain family lived and worked on the canal for over a century.
Canal Quarters offers an extraordinary interpretive opportunity for people of all ages. Stay overnight in a lockhouse and experience life as it may have been during a bygone era on the C&O Canal. Seven lockhouses have been painstakingly rehabilitated and furnished to evoke different eras in the canal’s history.

Lockhouse 21 has full amenities, including a working kitchen and bathroom with shower. At mile marker 16.7.
