Paw Paw Tunnel Hike

Bring your flashlight! Join the Trust for a guided walk through the Paw Paw Tunnel in Allegany County. Last year, the National Park Service completed the Paw Paw Tunnel Scaling Project – a project to address rockfall and timber hazards on this section of the towpath. During the hike, we will discuss how this project contributes to the safety and wellness of visitors to the C&O Canal National Historical Park (NHP).

Date: Friday, August 16, 2024, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Location: Paw Paw Campground
Oldtown, MD 21555

Parking: There are plenty of parking spaces at the Paw Paw Campground.
Restrooms: Port-a-pots are located near the campgrounds.
Accessibility: This program involves standing and the ability to walk 3 miles on flat ground and through the dark while inside the tunnel.

Program:
August is Wellness Month! At the beginning of the hike, we will gather together at the campground and talk about the National Park Service’s stabilization project at Paw Paw Tunnel and how projects like this both contribute to visitor safety and the effects on resources in the Park. We will discuss what it means to #RecreateResponsibly and how weather may affect visitation and well-being. Then we will walk on the towpath to the Paw Paw Tunnel, where we will walk through it together. We will finish the program by hiking back to the campground, and for those who are interested, have lunch together in neighboring canal town – Paw Paw, WV!
