A first stop for visitors to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park at Cumberland is the Visitor Center in the historic Western Maryland Railway Station. One section of the exhibit center is focused on mining and the Western Maryland coal industry. Access to the towpath is adjacent to the Visitor Center. At Cumberland, visitors have an opportunity to ride behind the coal-fired Mountain Thunder on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
