Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas championed the preservation of the C&O Canal. In 1954, when many news editors were supporting the idea of turning the canal into a parkway, he challenged several editors to walk the length of the canal with him. Following the hike, the Washington Post newspaper changed its editorial position, which fueled the preservation movement. The bust was dedicated in 1977. Can you imagine hiking or biking the entire 184.5 miles of the canal? Many people do it every year.
