Winter Whimsies on the C&O Canal

Every winter the Park Service takes precautions to prevent damage to the historic structures within the C&O Canal NHP. Some of these include dewatering the canal, shutting off the water pumps, and boarding up the Southern portal od the Paw Paw Tunnel. These actions help prevent the damage caused by cold temperatures, freezing, and thawing. Just like efforts are taken to protect the park you should take measures to stay safe while visiting the C&O Canal. Before heading out be sure to check the Park’s current conditions page to be aware of any weather conditions, hazards, or closures in the park.
