Winter is a wonderful time to experience the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) on your own, with a friend, or by attending a special event or ranger program. The park is open daily and visitors are welcome to join rangers for the following fun and exciting activities, December through February.
December 3 – Gilmore Light Ensemble Performance – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Come listen to this 19th century-inspired band as they perform traditional music and carols using hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo, and accordion.
December 9 – Saralyn musical troupe – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Performances include songs on the mandolin, guitar, and banjo.
December 16 – Mountain Dulcimers of Northern Virginia – 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Visitors may try their hand at playing a mountain dulcimer, percussion instrument, or simply sing along.
January 1 – First Day Hike – All day, Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Kick off the new year and join us for activities and fun on New Year’s Day.
January 27 – C&O Canal’s Historic Aqueducts – 2:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Join C&O Canal Volunteer, Steve Dean, for a presentation on the eleven C&O Canal aqueducts. Steve will explore each aqueduct, interesting features, past and present restoration projects, and the function. February 18 – George Washington Ball – 1:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Join Dr. Larry Keener Farley and his 19th-century dance ensemble for an afternoon Civil War-era dance. Visitors will be able to enjoy the music and join in the fun and dance. Instruction will be provided; no previous experience is required!
