Brunswick, Md. — Jenny and Wayne Spangenberg, of Winchester, Va., were biking the C&O Canal in Brunswick on a recent weekday when they spotted a sign advertising a new bike shop in town.

"We're headed there," Wayne said. The pair often bike along the canal's towpath, lured by the shady, scenic trail and the quaint towns along the way.
