The camera and the paintbrush, in the hands of an artist, have the power to inspire and awe. These tools have also been used, throughout their respective histories, to document, educate, and record. The C&O Canal has long been a popular destination for photographers and painters alike. They have helped us to recognize and appreciate more deeply the people who operated the canal, its natural beauty, and the powerful juxtaposition of the enduring alterations to the landscape required of this artificial waterway.
We are fortunate that the C&O Canal NHP has nearly 30,000 photographs of the park in its collection, many of which capture the canal during its operational years. The C&O Canal Trust is helping to make these images available to the public, in some cases for the first time ever, in the gallery of images below. The Trust is also committed to promoting the work of contemporary canal artists who are creating a legacy for this and future generations to enjoy.
