The Canal Quarters program would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the volunteers who oversee the lockhouses, provide periodic maintenance, and assist park visitors. The C&O Canal Trust's Quartermasters work in teams to regularly inspect the lockhouses. They provide the backbone of the Canal Quarters program and are invaluable links to the communities along the canal.
Paul Buscemi - "I've been visiting the C&O Canal for over thirty years starting when I lived in Baltimore. My friends and I would go to Harpers Ferry to hike, bike, canoe and swim in the Potomac. When I moved to Rockville in 1987 I would bike from Swains lock North and South for short trips to multi hour trips and covered most of the canal on those many trips. When my son was a Boy Scout now an Eagle scout I was Adventure coordinator for the troop and every other year the troop and I would bike the entire canal in 5 days, one year we did the Great Alleghany Passage and got off of the towpath at Williamsport, we went caving near Dam 4 went on many hikes and did multiple canoe outings with the troop our favorite from Dargen bend to Lander Rd. My twin girls are 12 and I've been taking them to the canal since they were 3 and continue to enjoy experiences with them. I'm excited to be a part of the Canal Quarters program and one of several Quartermasters for lock #28 and look forward to many years of service and of course continuing to enjoy one of the local gems that is the C&O Canal."
Ed Rhodes - Ed Rhodes and his wife moved to Harpers Ferry in 2004 and he retired in 2005. He had biked the canal for years and started volunteering after he retired. He is a Level Walker from Mile 55 to 60 and one of the quartermasters for Lockhouse 28. You can find him on the canal four days a week...either volunteering, biking or walking.
