Happy Earth Day! Find out how you can make a difference this Earth Day by implementing the five tips below!
1. Give Extra Love to Your House Plants
Got plants? Give them some extra attention by watering them and singing to them. Do some transplanting for those plants that have gotten too big for their pot.
Don’t have plants? You can find seeds without leaving your home! Save those cores from consumed fruits and veggies and plant them in small containers. You will be amazed at how quickly the ends of lettuce or an apple or lemon seed will grow.
2. Make a Snack for the Birds
Go online to find a simple pine cone bird feeder recipe or if you do not have pine cones, you can easily treat your local birds by smearing a mixture of peanut butter or Crisco and bird seed on the bark of trees in your yard. You can even leave out unsalted seeds and nuts for your backyard visitors!
It is also quite simple to attract hummingbirds with a DIY hummingbird feeder by reusing an old plastic water bottle and hanging it outside with a sugar water solution. You can find out how by visiting https://nationalzoo.si.edu/migratory-birds/hummingbird-nectar-recipe .
3. Clean Up Your Backyard
We all have areas of our yard that could use a bit of a touch-up. Make it your personal Earth Day beautification challenge and get outside to care for land just outside your door. Weeding and cultivating plants can be a huge stress reliever in times like these.
4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Do you recall the three R’s? Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle. What does this mean for you?
Reduce: Limit your water usage by taking shorter showers. Turn off your lights and open those shades! Take advantage of the natural sunlight.
Reuse: Make face masks out of old clothing! Re-purpose old materials that you find lying around your house to make some crafts!
Recycle: Find out where you can drop off recyclable materials by visiting https://berecycled.org/search/ and entering your zip code. Most plastic, aluminum, glass, and cardboard can be recycled!
5. Donate to the C&O Canal Trust
Support the C&O Canal National Historical Park by donating money so that we can continue to preserve and protect the park!
